Truth: Absolute or Relative?

They say to never talk about politics or religion. I’ll be ignoring that advice in this article.

What is truth?

Is there an absolute truth or is truth relative?

I’ve not had cable TV for a couple of decades and back then I wasn’t interested in Fox or CNN. I’ve seen enough CNN at airports to know how one sided they are, and I’ve watched enough clips of Fox News on YouTube to see how they have their own spin on things.

I’m trying to actually find actual journalism with minimum spin on it. At this point, I get most of my information from YouTube watching different folks with different leanings and for political items.

I’ll actually watch the uncut press conferences from different folks to actually hear what they are saying. While they have their own spin on what they are saying, at least it is unfiltered.

It would be nice to have more long form discussions from folks instead of things that have to fit in between commercial breaks. I know in the day and age of Twitter’s 280 characters, and TikTok’s 10 second videos that long form isn’t popular, but otherwise it is too easy for folks to be manipulated and it’s apparent that has been happening for a very long time.

My world view is that the Bible is true, and that our moral foundations should be based off of what God says. It’s not about what is culturally acceptable 50 years ago, last year, today, or 5 years from now. There is a standard that preserves life and law and order and handles all aspects of social life.

That standard is the Bible.

Of course, not many agree with this and a lot of people actively oppose it. There is some really sick and twisted things going on in the world, and people don’t see a way out of this mess. As much as I want the local, state, and federal government to be aligned with what the Bible teaches, it’s not going to until Christians actually live by what God tells us in His Word.

Change has to happen individually. Folks have to see an actual difference in those who claim the name of Christ and actually live by what He teaches. Only then do we have a chance of ending the craziness that abounds today.

Matthew 22:34-40

  1. But when the Pharisees had heard that He had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
  2. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked Him a question, tempting Him, and saying,
  3. “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”
  4. Jesus said unto him, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.’
  5. This is the first and great commandment.
  6. And the second is like unto it, ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbor as yourself.’
  7. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

So Jesus said the following 2 things are the most important commandments:

  1. Love God with everything you are.
  2. Love your neighbor / fellow man / those you interact with as you love yourself.

If we could get those 2 things right, everything else will take care of itself.

For folks who don’t share the same world view, perhaps simply starting with #2 would be good.

It’s known as the Golden Rule…

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

If our politicians did this, it would be amazing. We can’t control others, especially politicians. But we can control ourselves and our actions in how we love those around us. It’s not about being a foot stool. We can be strong and firm, but still do it with love.

If you read this and want to know more about God and Jesus, grab the Bible app and start reading in the book of John. It’s the forth book in the New Testament.

I’d ask that you not judge the God of the Bible on what people say about Him, or how people who claim His name act. Instead, search for the truth yourself. Feel free to reach out if you see something you don’t understand. I don’t have all the answers, but I’ll work with you to find those answers.

God loves you. Jesus died for you.

Men fall short. Men are untrustworthy. God isn’t. He inspired men to pen His words, and He has preserved His words for millenniums.

For fellow Christians, let’s do everything in love. Not only is truth needed, but so is mercy.

Proverbs 16:6-7

  1. By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.
  2. When a man’s ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.

My world view says that truth is absolute. Sometimes you hear things like “your truth. “Your truth” is a myth. There is “your take” or “your understanding” or “your spin”, but not “your truth”. There are typically at least 3 sides to everything… Side A, Side B, and the Truth.
